Yesterday, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine from a different industry, and we were talking about reality TV shows. This genre of television has had an unfortunate impact on her business.
As we spoke, I started thinking about reality TV shows from the beauty industry, and how deplorable they are. Now, to begin with, I loathe any reality TV show, but beauty “reality” is absolutely horrendous.
Why would any self respecting salon owner/stylist want to be on one of these shows? All they do is make everyone look like a bunch of uneducated, whiny, sniveling, bitchy little brats. On top of that, our industry watches these shows, and looks up to the ringleader as some guru who they think is actually doing something.
Now, I will let you all in on a little secret; reality TV is scripted! Shocking, right? How did you ever miss that? These shows are all staged for TV ratings. Yet, the salon owners who go on these shows believe it will be good for their business.
Have you ever watched Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey? You know, the TV show where Gordon goes to different restaurants to see how filthy they are; how poorly run they are, and of course, how bad the food is. After seeing these places, I would never choose to eat a meal at one of these restaurants. I don’t care how clean Gordon Ramsey made the kitchen for TV. If these owners were that haphazard once, letting food spoil and having cockroaches run around, then they will let it happen again. The old saying “no such thing as bad press” is bullshit. There IS such thing as bad press. When you are willing to show the world how stupid you are, you’re only leading the path to disaster.
At the end of the day, there are no quick fixes in business, or in life. Put a plan together, work hard and do your own thing. If you try to jump to the front with a gimmick, it may put you in the limelight today, but usually for the wrong reasons. Ultimately, you won’t stay there. The ones who stay at the top are usually the ones who have earned it and deserve it.
Until next time, carve your own path and do the work yourself, no one owes you anything except you.
